An interactive exhibition celebrating type design
Kontrapunkt has worked with type design for more than 35 years. We were invited to be featured at the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo, and later ddd gallery in Kyoto. The exhibition, Kontrapunkt Type, brings a tactile and three dimensional experience to visitors through 10 selected typography works, showcasing the craftsmanship. Each typeface focused on unique characteristics and inspiration - all unfolded with projection mapping, interactive motion and visuals on the walls of the galleries.
The entire interactive exhibit was designed, built and produced by Kontrapunkt.
From offline exhibition to online experience
When we were preparing for the opening at Kyoto, COVID-19 hit and around the globe people were encouraged to stay home. So, like everyone else, we had to quickly adapt to the new reality. We chose to turn the offline exhibition into an online experience, making it accessible to everyone, from the safety and shelter of their own home.
We leveraged cutting edge technology to recreate the physical experience - from the interactive foot pedals, the projection mapped storytelling, and the three dimensional expression of each typeface's unique design. Built in webGL and optimised for fluid interaction, we view this site as not only an extension of our design work but as a tool to deliver a focused experience to anyone with a modern browser on mobile or desktop.
With a new groundbreaking virtual format of the exhibition, Kontrapunkt and ddd invited people everywhere, from Kyoto to Copenhagen and California, to join the experience of Kontrapunkt Type.
