A Celebration of Nature
Situated in the east coast of Miyako island in Japan, The Rescape is a hideaway hotel that offers a quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of ordinary life. Nicely situated on a beach, we wanted to celebrate the beauty and serenity of the hotel and the ocean with a fitting wordmark and typeface.

Bespoke Typeface

An eroding typeface

The bespoke typeface 'Ushio' for The Rescape, is the erosion of a typeface. The letters start off bold and robust, becoming smoother and more rounded as time passes. It is a typeface which develops and changes appearance – just like natural elements left in the sea.

Our curiosity inspired the typeface. What would happen if we dropped the letter 'a' in the ocean and let the sand, beach and waves do their job? How would it look after 20, 100 or 1000 years?

Ushio
Nature is its own craftsman; rocks, driftwood, seashells and even glass, will tumble and grind until sharp edges are smoothed and rounded by the ocean and the beach.
